Orihuela 0 – Atletico Madrid 1: Forlan’s goal was enough

October 31, 2008

Atlético Madrid achieved a comfortable victory to take back to the Vicente Calderón after they beat Orihuela 0-1 on Wednesday night.

As expected, the quality of Los Rojiblancos overcame Orihuela’s push and Diego Forlán scored the only goal of the game just before half-time as he picked up on a fine pass by Antonio López to slot home from close distance. Atlético are now firmly in a good position to prepare the return leg in two weeks time whilst Orihuela will have to a lot better in the capital if they are to win this tie.

This way, Atlético are in a better situation than other teams of Spanish Primera, like Real Madrid, Villarreal and Sevilla, which lost against 2ªB rivals.

Orihuela: Alberto, Kili, Benja, Iker, Andrés, Inarejos, Pereira, Juanjo Martínez, Santi Villa, Ibán Espadas, Esparza

Atlético Madrid: Leo Franco, Pernía, Pablo, Perea, Antonio López, Raúl García, Camacho, Luís García, Miguel de las Cuevas (`60 Banega), Forlán, Sinama-Pongolle

Is the team deep enough for three competitions?

September 8, 2008

It has happened to a number of teams that, after qualifying for UEFA or Champions League, they struggled to play a recent role in the national league. The cases of Celta and Real Sociedad come to my mind. Only squads with two players per position manage to handle to perform good in both competitions. Regarding this issue, Miguel de las Cuevas seems confident that Atletico is one of those teams.

Focusing on squad depth, he added, “Our manager is going to use everyone. I think that we have a good enough squad to form two teams. We’re in three competitions and there are going to be opportunities for all of us in the first team, and even for those in the reserve sides. We want to win lots of games and we all have a strong desire.

“The squad has been working hard for a long time and needs a break. A few days of vacation is going to be good for us, to go home and rest.”

It is still to be seen if the team will be able to cope with a season that started very early, due to the Champions League qualifying games. My biggest concern relies on how much does the team rely on Forlán and, especially Agüero, as the other lines seem to be well covered, with at least two good players per position.
