Atletico de Madrid 2 – Mallorca 0: Agüero’s magic

November 2, 2008

Sergio Aguero offered a stunning performance on his return to the Atletico Madrid ranks on Saturday with both goals in a victory over Real Mallorca. The team missed him in the previous games but it seemed the right decision to leave him on the bench due to fitness concerns.

His scored the opener in the 12th minute when he coolly lobbed the ball over Mallorca goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya after latching onto a headed pass from strike partner Diego Forlan. Later in the 28th minute, Antonio Lopez gave a quality pass to the inside of the area where Forlan’s hopelessly mis-cued effort found Aguero at the far post, giving the young Argentinian an easy tap-in.

Atletico deserved to be in front at half-time, but Mallorca reacted in the second time. First Aduriz could consider himself unlucky after his acrobatic effort smashed against the Atletico crossbar. Later on, Leo Franco did a brilliant one-handed to a Webo’s great opportunity just 5 yards from the goal line.

Here are the guidelines:

Atletico de Madrid v Mallorca Preview

November 1, 2008

October has been a painful month for Atletico de Madrid After a very promising opening with valuable wins against Shalke 04, Málaga and Recreativo Atletico had to show if they were at the level of the best teams of La Liga. The result has been rather disappointing. The defeat at home with Sevilla (0-1) opening a horrible month for Los Colchoneros, with an embarrassing 6-1 defeat against FC Barcelona and a 1-2 against Real Madrid. But the draws against Liverpool at Calderón and the 4-4 at Villarreal opened a bit of a hope in the club.

Atletico de Madrid captain Maxi Rodriguez  knows that against Mallorca this evening they need all three points.

“We have already played our direct rivals and now we must win,” he said, “We must not drop any more points, we must concentrate and perform in this game which will be a difficult match.”

The Atletico Madrid tickets sale for this game showed that the fans are willing to give another chance to the team, hoping that November will start with the right foot.

Villarreal 4 – Atletico Madrid 4: Why do it simple?

October 27, 2008

Why do it simple when you can make it complicated? That’s what Ever Banega maybe thought before doing his unnecessary tackle to Capdevilla and seeing a well deserved second booking in the minute 37. Until that very moment, Atletico Madrid had managed their 0-2 advantage comfortably against a very good team as are Villareal. After Banega was sent off the story changed and Villareal came back 4-2 within the first 22 minutes of the second half. Only the inspiration of Simao and the pride of the team could make the miracle and scored two goals in the last ten minutes of the game.

FC Barcelona 6 – Atletico 1: Embarrassing

October 8, 2008

It has taken me 4 days to find the energy to write about one of the most painful moments as an Atletico de Madrid fan.

I was lucky enough not to see the 0-6 that Barça got three years ago in Vicente Calderon, so probably the game on Saturday was the biggest humiliation that I’ve attended as an Atletico fan. I can still believe that the team let some of the goals. Not just the third goal, scored by Messi because when Coupet was ordering the wall, as the Argentinean hadn’t requested the wall. Some of the other goals were as embarrassing as the third one. Seeing Eto’o receiving the ball just outside the penalty area with no one from Atletico within 10 meters was even worse.

Anyone can say that it’s just three points, but I personally think that a defeat like this isn’t just three points, as it’s more painful and damages the moral of the fans and, if they’re a bit professional, of the squad.

Three years ago, the 0-6 defeat against FC Barcelona was the trigger for Fernando Torres to move out of Atletico. Let’s see if what we suffered the other day won’t have the same effect in Agüero.

Preview: FC Barcelona v Atletico de Madrid

October 4, 2008

Tonight’s game between Atletico de Madrid and FC Barcelona is understood by many like a showdown between Sergio Agüero and Lionel Messi, the two most in-form strikers of La Liga.

Only three days after both Argentineans led their teams to respective Champions League triumphs, Agüero takes Atletico to face Messi and FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou stadium (10 pm).

Agüero scored a top class goal on Wednesday in the 2-1 win against Marseille to keep Atletico’s dreamt start in the Champions League. Messi came on in the second half and scored both goals – including the injury-time winner – in Barcelona’s 2-1 win at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Aguirre has warned already that Agüero can’t fully performed as he’s carrying and ankle knock and he hasn’t been given any rest in the first games of the season.

“I’m tired,” the 20-year-old Aguero told reporters after the victory over Marseille. “And it’s a difficult game. But it’s Barcelona.”

From his part, Messi was rested ahead of the Shakhtar match due to fatigue, with both players not having had much of a break since leading Argentina to gold at the Olympics.

But that won’t stop either from playing on Saturday.

Preview – Getafe v Atletico de Madrid

September 23, 2008

Getafe will try to find a way to stop the crack Kun Agüero in their clash against Atletico de Madrid tomorrow night. The Argentinean has, no doubt, lead Atletico in their four crushing victories in their last five matches in all competitions, where they have scored 16 and conceded just two, in the 2-1 defeat away to Valladolid (Agüero didn’t start that game after returning late from playing with the Argentina squad earlier that week).

However, Javier Aguirre is obtaining a good performing out the entire team, with a very solid defense, an outstanding Maniche in the midfield, two explosive wings and the most feared pair of strikers in La Liga.

“Agüero is very mature for his age and is starting to fulfil expectations. But it isn’t just Agüero, it is the whole of Atletico that give you cause for concern,” Getafe striker Manu del Moral said of his former club.

Atletico are offering a good performing at the start of the season, with a clear victory in the Champions League and keeping their eye on the ball in the domestic competition. They trashed Recreativo Huelva 4-0 on Saturday.

However, Getafe won’t put things easy, as they are unbeaten with five points from three games, one behind their near neighbours Atletico.

Atletico 4 – Recreativo de Huelva 0

September 23, 2008

Atletico de Madrid ended a magical week with another triumph. After winning PSV Eindhoven last Tuesday, the fans enjoyed another 4-0 victory at the Estadio Vicente Calderon for the third time in as many games.

Again Agüero

Confidence was up in Javier Aguirre’s squad after FC Schalke 04 and Málaga CF had both suffered four-goal reverses in the Spanish capital this season and Sergio Agüero, who scored twice in the 0-3 win in the Netherlands on Tuesday, opened the tab against Recreativo de Huelva after eight minutes.

‘Pichichi’ Pongolle

Maniche doubled their advantage on 53 minutes with a low right-footed shot inside the near post from 20 metres after the visitors had failed to clear a corner, and that sparked a period of even better football from the hosts. Miguel de las Cuevas ran the left wing and gave a great pass back for Sinama Pongolle to make the 3-0 against the side he departed in the summer (he didn’t celebrate the goals). But the best action of the game was yet to come. Banega gave a 40 meters pass that Luis Garcia prolonged to Sinama who, after a stylist move faced the keeper and scored.
